Final Project

Rational

My design is a BBQ table. Normally, BBQ table are design to put the table in meddle and the seat on side. However, in some place there has a group of the table put together as the large group. The user are force to face to the strange which sit next to them and clearly know what you doing and talking. It is embarrassing. User would not do these when there has other choice. They always skip the seat next to the others and use the table away from the others. It means they waste the table in the between or they are uncomfortable.

In my design, I try to make the user comfortable and protect their privacy even they seating next to each other.  The concept I come up with is the S shape which combine the chair and the table together. A set of the BBQ table are 3, the large one in the middle and two small on the side.  They are reverse direction to the next and setting next. The table has a curve stand on the side which is design for the wheelchair person.  It allowed them sitting on the side without move to the seat.  The design create the curve in the corner with avoid the hurt to the user. To allow the set arrange as the large group, the length of seat are little bit shorter than the table.  It creates the pass for the user. The table can be set in different method for different place. It can serve different size of group.

For the material, I use the stainless steel as the stand and the wood plastic as the seat.  The street furniture need to facing the outdoor environment such as wind and rain. The stainless steel allowed it use for long time. It is used for the screw as well.  To make it has the wood form; I use wood plastic as the seat. Compare to the wood, it is good to put in outdoor. Wood plastic has low cost and can be recycled.

My design is the BBQ table which normally used in the park and beach. Therefore, I use the simple colour of wood and metal sliver to make it suit with different environment.  In order to make less influence, I put the screw in the bottom of seat. It makes the surface simple and clean.

I like how you design it for people with wheelchair, but i think it has too much curves for the table and chair, you can make it a bit more simple.

It is good to seperate the group and save the place. The design can also include the wheelchair user. It is good design for the small group. However, it would be better to consider whether can be use for the large group.

You should look into the strength of the material, and whether or not it could support a cantilever. If someonr seat on the end, the structure would flex, bend or break. It could solve it by providing supports at the end, or studying strengths of materials, etc.

The knife holder is interesting and ceramic is heavy and easy to broke. The shape is prety.

The concept of the holder is good. However the way to put the knife need more consider. It may hurt the user by using it.

Ceramic is not enviroment friendly. It waste the energy to bake. On the other hands, ceramic may damege the knife or broke. Moreover, user may hurt by take the knife.

The design of the holder is useful. However, it is not good as the gift.  On the other hand, the material need to be considered.

The key ring and hook cannot be a gift. It is not good to send someone as gift. The holder is fine. But the material need to consider. Bamboo is fine but not good enough and need to reduce the material.

Big ideas that changed the world: Consumerism

Our environment has been changed because of consume. Follow by the increasing of the population, the more we need and more we produce. It takes a great number of resources from our planet.  The increasing of the produce leads the environmental problem. The temperature is increasing, the icecaps melting and sea levels rising. We are losing our lands by year.

Industrial revolution has the biggest influence on it. The mount manufacture good appear. Price of products is decline. More and more people could afford. Luxury are started take into consider.  Product is no longer being the thing you need it more about what they let you feel.  It starts too related to our deeps feelings, our emotion, even our identities and then trend to our desire. The focus of design is also changed.

Every year we buy more products that we think we need using more energy and resource creating more waste. However, we are consumerism our self our planet.

The development of the world is not fair. The china use only a decade achieve the level which American use two century.  However, the developing of some country brings the impact to the third world.  The need of the product leads the demand of labour. It became the reason of Sweatshops, child labour and dangerous working conditions.

It seems like we know what is going on our life and we need to change. As a designer, we play an important role on this system. We are design what we going to produce. The sustainable products are what we need. Using less energy and bring less impact on the environment.

Three take home message:

1.       Over consumerism is the reason of the environmental crisis.

2.       The development of some countries brings the problem to the third world.

3.     The ture happiness are difficult to achieve.

The format of the rational is not linked with each other. The style of the each page could be more related. The design of the label need to be more.

The idea of two linked drawer is new. However the handle on the right hand side is quite weak.
It would be good to make it more strong, may be change the hard material.

The merge on the back of the main part is to disgusting. It should be put inside.

The improve of the idea is nice. The two drawer is not work well in the model. Need to think more about the material or some other detail. It would be better to put some more mark on the label which can remain customer how much they take.

Video Reflection B

This four video bring me lot information. It uses the simple image and interesting explains the manufacture crisis in our society.

The story of stuff gives me the general idea of what crisis we facing of manufacture. It shows the relation between the environmental and social issue. A quick look of product’s life has been given in the video. It started from extraction to production to distribution to consumption to dispose. I am in shock of how we take the dioxin from the whole process and what we done to the environment. As a designer how can I make the change to this situation?  This need to take into consider in my future design.

Electronic product is common stuff in our life. It is also represent the crisis of the manufacture. The electronic product used the great number of different type of material.  The workers need to work with dioxin during production.  The safety of the employer cannot be protected. All these dioxin also bring to the user. However, the lives of these products are quickly end in the Chinese recycling shop. Every year, there has 25million tons electronic product be wasted. This huge waste is unfriendly to our environment and unsustainable. 

Compare to the electronic, the cosmetics are connect with our body directly. It has been used directly on our body everyday and more one type. I know it has some constituted is not good. However it still scared to see how it damaged our body.  It is such serious crisis to everyone but as the designer I have no idea how to change it. That’s a horrible thing that you still need to use those cosmetics on your body even you know it may bring the cancer.  The marketing give you no choose of it.

Not like the cosmetics which damaged our body, bottled water not influences our health direct. However, it is waste of the material, energy and has nothing better than the tap water. Although I never realized how serious problem the bottle water can bring to our society, I am not the one who supports the bottle water. Now, I am pride that I am not the one who likes the bottle water. The every process on the bottled water manufacture is creating the waste.  Is that’s necessary to using the resource and energy to produce the bottle for these water and using the energy to transported the bottle water for less than 10mins drink?

Making the change to the world is the thing I expect in my design.  The problem we facing is the entire thing that I can challenge. Knowing the problem, facing the problem and fix the problem.

Three take home message:

-The manufacture should be sustainability, equality, green chemistry, zero waste, closed loop, production, renewable energy, local living economic.

-The consumption habit can be changed.

-To increasing the life of the product reduce the waste of the product need to be considering into deign.

The idea of Can is challenge and not easy to process.
The idea of the cereal box is good to improve more.

The cereal box is interesting. However it is not good idea to control the intake of customer. The liquid bottle for the elder is a good idea, but the design is weak.

The topic of food waste is common. It is good to reseach more about the packaging. Change the open method is not the only way to control the quanlity. On the other hands, the intake for different people may be different.

Video Reflection （A）

Giving packaging a new life

These video bring me a new world of the recycle. It let me comprehend the different recycled method of different material.  The recycling process feels like the magic transferring the rubbish into new product or packaging. Automation separate system is most amazing part. The rubbish is separated automatically by the system even the small pieces. The milk box was the one I thought could not be recycle or not easy to do. It is made by polyethylene, paper and aluminium.  However, the video shows how simple and easy to deal with those box.  This makes me know how incredible the design can bring to our life. I was thought that recycle material can only make the pipe or newspaper.  Therefore, I am shocked when I realized how great numbers of the recycling material are used in our life.

However, to be a designer I need to think something more than praise such as using all this information when I design a production.  For example, when I consider the material of my design I need to consider the recycling process.  Composite material is one of the materials I need avoid to using it. Because of it is not easy to be recycled.

How it’s made: packaging

Watching the video makes me like a primary school student. It has so much information in it. The video shows that recycling material has been used in common.  Most of the goods in our life could be made by recycling material.  The most common material from recycle is PET and aluminium as we know. PET can fully recyclable for other uses such as product that containing plastic.  The recycling of PET could have no waste. It is same as the aluminium. Aluminium cans can recycle back into new roll and make into new product or cans. The machines for making the packaging tubes are also attract me.  Owing to I never think about it is made in this way.  However that’s not the best information I got. The best part is about glass bottle.  It is green, no trees are dying to made it, natural ingredient, endlessly recycle, make it using less energy than metal and plastic.  Moreover it’s a beautiful material for the designer.

This video inspires me a lot of thinking of my future design. It is a useful video for design student to learning the produce process of product. As a designer, the project we created is not an art work. It’s a product. We are not the artists who create the beauty for the world. Designer will more care about the use of the product. To know the manufacture process is the way to learn and know the product.

To sum up, the material is the most important thing of a design. It could affect how it look, what is the price, the service life and something more than itself, such as environment. To using the recyclable material is significant for the designer. However, we also care about the price. Therefore to knowing the property of different material is necessary.

 

Three most important take home messages:

1. Comprehending the material before I choose it to knowing does it recyclable and how it can be recycled.

2. Working on the manufacture process when I design a product.

3. Public need to working more on the garbage sorting.  It is also a work for designer to find out the better way to solve it.
